Tewak-Making Experience Program
Tewak
The tewak is a traditional float used by Jeju’s haenyeo and has been in use since the Joseon Dynasty, as shown in Tamna Sunryeokdo (1702).
Its name comes from tebak, meaning “a gourd with a rim.”In the past, tewak were made from gourds, and during the Japanese colonial period, some haenyeo used glass floats from shipwrecks.
Since the 1970s, tewak have mainly been made from Styrofoam, which is lighter, durable, and more practical for diving.
Tewak-Making Experience Program
This hands-on experience invites you to create miniature versions of the tewak, the most important diving tool used by haenyeo.
During the program, you will hear stories directly from a haenyeo about the tewak and its meaning, while making one together.
Participants can create a variety of tewak-inspired souvenirs, including miniature tewak, tewak keyrings, tewak wind chimes, and tewak brooches.
