Tewak
The tewak is the most essential diving tool used by haenyeo during their work at sea.
It allows haenyeo to maintain their position on the water’s surface while collecting and storing seafood.
A tewak consists of three main parts: the durungbak, the eoeum, and the mangsari.
1. The durungbak is a buoyant float designed to remain on the water’s surface at all times.
In the past, haenyeo used dried gourds by hollowing them out and allowing them to dry naturally.
Today, the durungbak is made by shaping Styrofoam into a round form and covering it with orange fabric.
2. The eoeum is a circular structure that connects the durungbak and the mangsari.
Traditionally, it was made of wood and was called doraejul in Jeju.
Doraejul was crafted from hardy kiwi wood, chosen for its strong resistance to water.
In modern times, the eoeum is made using plastic piping.
3. The mangsari is a net used to store seafood collected by haenyeo while diving.
In the past, haenyeo wove nets using native grasses found on Jeju Island.
However, as these plants have since disappeared, mangsari are now made using nylon netting.
테왁
테왁은 해녀가 물질을 할 때 가장 중요한 물질 도구이다.
해녀는 테왁을 통해 바다 위에서 자신의 위치를 유지하고, 채취한 해산물을 보관하며 작업을 이어간다.
테왁은 크게 세 가지 부속으로 구성되어 있다.
첫 번째는 두룽박, 두 번째는 어음, 세 번째는 망사리이다.
1. 두룽박은 부력을 이용해 항상 물 위에 떠 있도록 만들어진 도구이다.
과거에는 박을 따서 속을 비우고 말려 부력체로 사용하였으나,
현재는 스티로폼을 깎아 둥근 형태로 만들고 오렌지색 천을 씌워 제작한다.
2. 어음은 두룽박과 망사리를 연결하는 원형의 구조물이다.
과거에는 나무로 제작되었으며, 제주에서는 이를 도래줄이라 불렀다.
도래줄은 참다래(키위의 한 종류) 나무로 만들어졌는데,
이 나무는 물에 강한 특성을 지니고 있기 때문이다.
현재는 플라스틱 파이프를 이용해 제작하여 사용하고 있다.
3. 망사리는 해녀가 바다에서 채취한 해산물을 담아 두는 그물망이다.
과거에는 제주에서 자라는 토종 풀을 잘라 엮어 그물망을 만들어 사용했으나,
해당 풀이 멸종되면서 현재는 나일론 재질의 그물망을 사용하고 있다.
