⬤ What is the job of a haenyeo?
Armed with traditional tools, seamaids rely on their skills and a buoyancy device called a teawak to collect seafood such as abalone, sea urchins, and sea urchins, octopus, and edible seaweed. Their sustainable methods and deep connection to the sea make their job truly special.
When and why did haenyeo start?
Dating back to the 17th century, haenyeo emerged in the matriarchal society of Jeju Island, where men were required to leave the island for extended periods of time. So women trained in diving skills and became the main providers of haenyeo!
⬤ Why are haenyeo important today?
Today, the culture of the haenyeo symbolises women's resilience and empowerment. But they're not just cultural icons, they're also environmental heroes.
Their eco-friendly fishing practices highlight the importance of sustainable fishing. They inspire future generations to respect and carry on their traditions.
